Masks

ilovemask_2

Smiling faces
grinning mouths
jovial and
happy,
the mask we wear
most
of the time

Living and acting
two words
one use
in a society
with norms
in a world
with many forms

The person
we truly are
is hidden
underneath;
is she sad –
is he mad?
am I truly glad,
do you know you’ve been had?

Beneath the cloak
under the disguise
are
layers upon layers
of pretense;
I wonder
why
we love our masks
that much
when all it does
is
hurt us so?
